Ice Age in release order

Seven films, seven shorts, two Fox half-hours and the six Disney+ shorts that finished the story off. Twenty-two entries from March 2002 to February 2027. The interesting thing about this franchise is that a squirrel who never speaks carries a third of it, and three of his shorts are prologues to films that came out years later.

In release order, Ice Age (2002) is followed by The Meltdown (2006), Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), Continental Drift (2012) and Collision Course (2016), with each Scrat short beside the film it sets up and the two Fox specials of 2011 and 2016 where they aired, then The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild and Scrat Tales in 2022, and Boiling Point, dated for 2027.

How to read this table

Everything is in the order it came out, oldest first. The columns:

  • Air date — when the entry was first released. Where a page carries something first seen outside the United States, that is the date used, and the notes under the table say so.
  • Sch — schedule order, which breaks a tie within a single day. On a night two of these went out, the earlier slot comes first - and a streaming episode that dropped after midnight comes before a programme broadcast that evening.
  • Notes — click Notes ... on any row for the episode's links and, where there is one, an explanation of the cross-over.
  • Watch — where you can watch that entry, in your own country. The badges link to the episode itself rather than to the service's front page. On a narrow screen this column is hidden - tap Notes ... on a row to see the same thing.
  • Watched — tick a box and it is remembered in this browser. Turn syncing on in Preferences and it follows you between devices, with no account and no email address. An episode listed on more than one franchise is ticked on all of them at once.

Three icons can appear in the Notes cell, and they are the reason this site bothers with release order at all:

  • Cross-over Story Impact Story impact — this episode references another series in the franchise.
  • Cross-over Story Arc Story arc — it is part of a story running across several series.
  • Cross-over Guest Star Guest star — a character from another series appears in it.

In the Watch column, the shape of a badge is the difference between watching something now and paying for it again:

  • P+ Solid — included with a subscription to that service.
  • P+ Outlined — there to rent or buy.

Your country is worked out from your connection and can be changed in Preferences. It is a snapshot rather than a live check, so treat it as a strong hint rather than a promise — services add and drop things constantly.

About this order

What is on this list

All seven Ice Age features: the five Blue Sky films from 2002 to 2016, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild on Disney+ in 2022, and Ice Age: Boiling Point, which is dated 5 February 2027 and has not come out yet.

Seven short films, from Gone Nutty in 2002 to The End in 2022. Both Fox television specials — A Mammoth Christmas on Thanksgiving night 2011 and The Great Egg-Scapade at Easter 2016. And all six Ice Age: Scrat Tales shorts, which arrived on Disney+ on one day in April 2022.

Three of the shorts are prologues, and this is the order to watch them in

Scrat's Continental Crack-Up came out at Christmas 2010, eighteen months before Ice Age: Continental Drift. It is the scene where Scrat chases the acorn into the centre of the earth and splits the supercontinent apart — which is the event the film opens on. Part 2 finished the job a year later. Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe does the same job for Collision Course: Scrat gets into a buried alien ship and knocks the solar system out of true, which is what sends the asteroid.

All three carry a cross-over mark, and they are the only marks on the page. Watch each one before its film and the film starts at the beginning. Watch the film first and its opening is a recap of something you have not seen.

Where each short actually came from

They did not all arrive the same way, and the dates here are the day each one first reached an audience rather than the day it was made.

Gone Nutty, No Time for Nuts and Surviving Sid were made for discs, and take the date of the disc — the first two on the Ice Age and Meltdown releases, and Surviving Sid, oddly, on the Horton Hears a Who! one. Scrat's Continental Crack-Up and Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe played in cinemas in front of a film from the same studio that had nothing to do with Ice Age: Gulliver's Travels and The Peanuts Movie.

Part 2 is the exception and goes the other way round. It was put online in November 2011 to trail Continental Drift, and only reached cinemas a month later in front of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The online date is the one used here.

Three dates that might be earlier than the ones shown

Gone Nutty and Surviving Sid may have appeared on British discs six weeks and seven weeks before the American ones, and No Time for Nuts may have gone out on German television three days before the disc it was made for.

The disc dates themselves are solid. What is not solid is that these shorts were on those particular British releases — that comes from a fan wiki and a film database rather than from anything at the time — and the German broadcast rests on a single television listings archive. This list uses the American dates, because putting a short on a disc that may never have carried it is a worse mistake than being six weeks late. If better evidence turns up, three rows move.

Two Oscar nominations, and nobody knows where they were shown

Gone Nutty and No Time for Nuts were both nominated for Best Animated Short. That requires a qualifying run in a cinema, and for these two nobody seems to have recorded one. The German Wikipedia says Gone Nutty played as a supporting short in cinemas in 2003, which fits the year it was nominated for, but names no film, no venue and no date. For No Time for Nuts there is nothing at all.

The last day

Scrat's final two appearances happened on the same Wednesday. All six Scrat Tales went up on Disney+ on 13 April 2022, and on the same day a video called The End appeared, unlisted, on a YouTube channel with nothing else on it — a 35-second shot made by a small group of Blue Sky artists after the studio had been closed, in which Scrat finally gets the acorn.

Which of the two came first that day is not recorded anywhere, so the Scrat Tales shorts are placed first and The End last. Its date is uncertain by one day as well: the trade press reported it on the Thursday and described it as having appeared on the Wednesday, which is the day used here.

It is listed here as The End, which is what the video was posted as. Follow its link and IMDb calls it Ice Age: The Last Adventure of Scrat, with The End in brackets after it — both names are the thing's own, and the shorter one is the one it went out under.

What is not here

Scrat: Spaced Out, a fifteen-minute piece on the Collision Course disc. It is mostly that film's Scrat scenes re-cut together with some extended footage, which makes it a compilation of things already on this list rather than something new.

The 2015 four-dimensional remake of No Time for Nuts, made for theme-park cinemas rather than released. The Scrat Pack discs, which collect shorts that are already here. Scrat Meets Scratte and the various making-of pieces, which are disc extras about the films.

The video games and the theme-park rides, which are not screen productions.

Every entry links to IMDb. Most link to their own Wikipedia article; the two Continental Crack-Up shorts and The End have no article of their own and link to the franchise page, and Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe links to the section of the Collision Course article that covers it — Wikipedia treats it as part of that film, which is fair given what it is.

Five of the six Scrat Tales shorts have no page on the Ice Age Wiki, so they carry no fan link. Only Nuts About You has one.
