Rewatching all of Star Trek, in release order
For the first time in years, nothing new is being made. Strange New Worlds has one short final season to come and Starfleet Academy a second, both filmed and neither dated, and nothing else is in production. That makes now a good time to start from The Cage and go all the way through, in the order it all came out.

The order, in one paragraph
In release order, Star Trek starts with The Cage, the 1965 pilot NBC turned down, then The Original Series (1966-69) and The Animated Series (1973-74), then the first four films, from The Motion Picture in 1979 to The Voyage Home in 1986. The Next Generation begins in 1987, with The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country released during its run; from 1993 Deep Space Nine runs alongside it, and from 1995 Voyager alongside Deep Space Nine, with Generations, First Contact and Insurrection in among them. Enterprise follows in 2001, with Nemesis in 2002, then the three films of 2009, 2013 and 2016. Discovery begins in 2017, and Short Treks, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Strange New Worlds join it from 2018, with Section 31 in 2025 and Starfleet Academy in 2026.
984 entries
That is every episode, every short and every film from The Cage, the pilot completed on 22 January 1965, to Strange New Worlds' fourth-season finale on 24 September 2026: fourteen films and thirteen series. A two-part story counts as two entries, and so do the feature-length premieres the list carries in two parts, such as Emissary and Caretaker.

How long it takes
Starting on Monday 28 September 2026, with nothing skipped and no nights off:
| Pace | Nights | Finishes |
|---|---|---|
| One a night | 984 | Thursday 7 June 2029 |
| Two a night | 492 | Tuesday 1 February 2028 |
| Three a night | 328 | Saturday 21 August 2027 |
Nobody watches every night, and the list will be longer by the time you get there: the last of Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy's second season will join it when they are dated. After a few weeks of ticking them off, the list shows your own finish date under your progress, worked out from what you have actually watched; on a phone it is in the Stats box.
The nights where the order matters
Watched one series at a time, most of Star Trek makes sense. These are the places where it does not, because two series or a film were telling one story between them. Each date links to its row on the list.
- 3 January 1993 – Deep Space Nine begins. Picard briefs Sisko aboard the Enterprise-D in Emissary, in the middle of The Next Generation's sixth season, and seven weeks later Birthright opens aboard the station. The two series are running at once from here to 1994.
- Spring 1994 – the Maquis, across three series. Journey's End starts the Maquis story on a border colony, Deep Space Nine's The Maquis follows within a month, The Next Generation answers it with Preemptive Strike, and in January 1995 Caretaker folds a Maquis cell into Voyager's crew. Watched a series at a time, that story is spread across years.
- 18 November 1994 – Generations, before Deep Space Nine's fourth season. When Worf arrives on the station in The Way of the Warrior the following September, he has come from the Enterprise-D that Generations destroyed.
- Autumn 1996 – the thirtieth anniversary. Voyager's Flashback puts Tuvok aboard Sulu's Excelsior during The Undiscovered Country, Deep Space Nine's Trials and Tribble-ations drops the Defiant into The Trouble with Tribbles, and First Contact opens eighteen days after that.
- October 1998 to May 1999 – the same seventeen nights. Deep Space Nine's last season and Voyager's fifth share seventeen dates. Voyager was on UPN on Wednesdays and Deep Space Nine was syndicated, each station choosing its own slot, so there was no single order anywhere in the country; the list puts Voyager first on each of those nights.
- 2019 – Discovery's second season. Pike, Number One and Spock come aboard, and If Memory Serves is a direct sequel to The Cage. It is where Strange New Worlds comes from, three years before that series starts.
- 5 May 2022 – one ending, one beginning. Picard's second season closes with Q's farewell on the same day Strange New Worlds begins. Both were released at the same moment, so the list keeps each series in its own order and puts the finale first.
- 22 July 2023 – Those Old Scientists. Boimler and Mariner fall through a portal onto Pike's Enterprise, by which point Lower Decks has three seasons out. In release order you have met them; watched Strange New Worlds first, you have not.

From my last full rewatch
Matt Large, who makes FROO
When Star Trek: Discovery was first announced I had the idea to rewatch all of Star Trek up to that point, naively thinking I would complete before the new show started. I finally finished Enterprise somewhere around the release of season 3 of Discovery. That experience was one of the reasons I wanted to build this website.
That rewatch, the first time watching many of the shows in over a decade, for The Animated Series first time ever, was a wonderful experience. I rediscovered just how much the TNG era had influenced me as a teenager, made me the person I am today.
One heads up, I found The Animated Series a bit of a slog. Long and slow. But, still worth it. Also, don't miss out on Prodigy, one show you might not have seen but a brilliant, if short lived, addition to the franchise.
